\"JapaneseJapanese Knotweed (also known as Fallopia Japonica, Renoutria Japonica or Polygonum Cuspidatum) was first introduced into Britain in the 19th century with the purpose of being an ornamental plant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over time though it has become widespread in many different habitats, including roadsides, riverbanks and derelict buildings. It outcompetes native plants and animals.<\/p>\n

Under The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 Hertfordshire Japanese Knotweed is now a controlled species and, as such, soil contaminated with its rhizomes must be disposed of appropriately and it is an offence to allow it to spread to other land.<\/p>\n

How Common Is Japanese Knotweed In Hertfordshire?<\/h2>\n

Japanese Knotweed is found sporadically around Hertfordshire and throughout the rest of the UK.<\/p>\n

It spreads easily too – through its crown, rhizome (underground stem) and stem segments, rather than its seeds. The weed can grow a metre in a month and can cause havoc below concrete and tarmac, coming up through the resulting cracks and\u00a0damaging buildings and roads.<\/p>\n

Studies have shown that a 1cm section of rhizome can produce a new plant in 10 days. Rhizome segments can remain dormant in soil for twenty years before producing new plants.<\/p>\n

Methods of Control<\/h1>\n

Stem\u00a0Injection<\/h2>\n

Stem injection targets the application of a controlled quantity of herbicide directly into the core of the plant between the second and third nodule. This direct targeting of the herbicidal application enables stem injection to be the least insidious method of eradication of Hertfordshire Japanese Knotweed.<\/p>\n

The stem injection is normally undertaken when the plant is dying back as it then draws the Herbicide into the root system. Unlike traditional spraying methods, the injection system is not weather dependant i.e heavy winds or rain.<\/p>\n

Stem injection can 100% be safely applied in an area where Tree Preservation Orders have been issued and where there are environmental constraints.<\/p>\n

Stem injection has no impact on any surrounding vegetation or wildlife. Stem injection is accepted and authorised by the E.A. to use on organic approved farms, without causing the loss of their organic status. Due to the labour intensiveness of stem injecting it is really on used on smaller sites or sites that carry environmental constraints such as water courses and or tree preservation orders.<\/p>\n

Knapsack Spraying<\/h2>\n

This is perfect for large infested sites that have no environmental constraints. The Herbicide is applied directly to the plant and absorbed through the leaf and into the rhizome.<\/p>\n

Knapsack applications are dependent on weather conditions. All Herbicide applications are carried out \u2018in-house\u2019 by our NTPC PA1 & PA6 qualified staff.<\/p>\n

To eradicate this invasive plant requires an understanding of its growth and legislation.<\/p>\n
